Growing right in front of the entrance to Jangsu County Office, the Uiamsong Pine Tree in Jangsu-ri, Jangsu is estimated to be about 400 years old. It is 11.9 m tall, with a trunk girth at breast height of 4.1 m; it has a single trunk, which about 1 m above the ground twists clockwise into a spiral, giving it the appearance of a dragon coiling its body. In its upper part the trunk divides into several branches forming a beautiful, umbrella-like crown. The name Uiamsong is said to come from a tradition that the tree was planted by Nongae, whose art name was Uiam, during the Japanese invasions of 1592, though this is not certain; it is thought more likely that local residents gave this name to the tree — which grows in the former courtyard of the Jangsu government office — in tribute to Nongae. Nearby stand Uiamsa Shrine, which holds a portrait of Nongae, and below it, Uiam Lake. As a tree that has lived for a long time under the care and attention of past generations, the Uiamsong Pine Tree in Jangsu-ri, Jangsu has high value as biological material, and is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
