Orijangnim Forest in Jacheon-ri, Yeongcheon was created to shield the village from the wind, protect its embankment and prevent flooding. It is said to have been planted by villagers in the 1500s, and today it is made up of some 200 trees, including Korean willow, zelkova and Chinese scholar tree. The name Orijangnim means 'five-ri-long forest' — a ri being a traditional unit of distance — reflecting the fact that the forest stretches for 5 ri, or about 2 km; it has been called this since early times. In more recent times it has also come to be known as Jacheon Forest. Since the forest was first created, the villagers have held a ceremony every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to pray for the village's peace. Orijangnim Forest in Jacheon-ri, Yeongcheon protects the embankment, guards the village and beautifies it as a pungchirim — a forest kept for its scenic charm — while also standing as valuable evidence of the Korean people's traditional reverence for nature; it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
