Garosup Forest in Sachon-ri, Uiseong is said to have been planted as a windbreak at the end of Goryeo by Kim Ja-cheom, the founding ancestor of the Andong Kim clan's settlement here, who moved from Andong to Sachon and created the forest to block the wind blowing in from the open plain to the west of the village. In Sachon it is known as Seorim, the 'West Forest'. Today the forest is made up of some 500 trees aged between 300 and 600 years, including zelkova, hackberry, oak, Chinese scholar tree and elm. Garosup Forest in Sachon-ri, Uiseong carries the tradition that Seoae Yu Seong-ryong, who served as chief state councillor under King Seonjo of Joseon (r. 1576–1608), was born within it; recognised as a cultural heritage revealing our ancestors' view of nature, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
