Zelkova trees are found in warm regions of Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. Their branches spread out in all directions, giving the tree a rounded form; it flowers in May and its disc-shaped fruit ripens in October. With its thick trunk and long lifespan, the zelkova has long been used as a shade tree providing a resting place, or protected as a guardian tree (dangsan tree) watching over a village. The Zelkova of Haksaru Pavilion in Hamyang is believed to be about 500 years old, standing 20.4 m tall with a girth at breast height of 8.3 m. It is said to have been planted in front of Haksaru Pavilion by Kim Jong-jik, styled Jeompiljae, while he was serving as magistrate of Hamyang. As a valuable record embodying the history of Hamyang, the Zelkova of Haksaru Pavilion is designated and protected as a natural monument.
