Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Dangsong Pine Tree in Dangsan-ri, Geochang is estimated to be about 600 years old, standing 13.0 m tall with a girth at breast height of 4.1 m. Its bark is cracked like a tortoise shell and axe marks remain at its base; although one branch on the southern side has died, the tree overall retains a beautiful shape. It is said that whenever a great event was about to befall the nation, the tree would give off a "hum-hum-hum" sound as a warning; because of this uncanny quality it is also called Yeongsong, the "miraculous pine", and stories tell that for months beforehand it cried out every night ahead of the loss of national sovereignty in 1910, Liberation in 1945, and the Korean War in 1950. Every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, villagers hold a memorial rite at the tree, and all the residents have formed an association to give it special protection. As a valuable piece of folklore and biology, the Dangsong Pine Tree of Dangsan-ri, Geochang is designated and protected as a natural monument.
