Habitat of Water Spiders in Eundae-ri, Yeoncheon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The water spider is the only species of its kind in the world, distributed across Korea, Japan, China, the temperate regions of Europe, Siberia and Central Asia. Whereas in most spiders the female is far larger than the male, in the water spider the male is larger than the female, at about 7 to 15 mm. Its body is covered with dense hairs that trap a silvery-white air bubble, allowing it to breathe underwater and also serving to repel water. It has the unique habit of attaching an air-filled sac, its dwelling, to underwater plants or small stones and living inside it. It spends its entire life underwater, and, like all spiders living in Korea, has a lifespan of one year. The water spider's unique way of life gives it very great academic value, and the water spider habitat in Eundae-ri, Yeoncheon, is, to date, the only known habitat in Korea of this globally rare species, and it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
