Pine Tree of Daeha-ri, Mungyeong
문경 대하리 소나무 · 聞慶 大下里 소나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pine Tree of Daeha-ri, Mungyeong belongs to the Sajeonggong branch of the Jangsu Hwang clan and is estimated to be around 400 years old. Its trunk and branches twist like a coiling dragon and spread out sideways, giving it the highly distinctive and beautiful appearance of two umbrellas propped up together. The ancestral hall and shrine of the Jangsu Hwang clan (a Gyeongsangbuk-do Folk Heritage site), which enshrines the portrait of Hwang Hui, pen name Bangchon, once stood near this tree, and for this reason the village came to be called Yeonggak-dong. Villagers are said to have gathered here every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to hold a dangsanje, a ritual honouring the village's guardian tree, known as the Yeonggakdong-je. The Pine Tree of Daeha-ri, Mungyeong has an unusual, well-preserved form resembling two umbrellas placed back to back, giving it great ornamental value. As the symbolic tree of the Yeonggakdong-je ritual it also has great academic and cultural value, and it has accordingly been designated and protected as a natural monument.
