The tree stands about 50 m east of the Anseongcheon Stream, on the eastern side of Yangnyeong-ri village; the surroundings are flat, with the walls of nearby houses standing within 2 m to its west and north. The Chinese Juniper of Yangnyeong-ri, Cheonan is said to have drifted here during a great flood some 1,200 years ago and taken root on this spot, and a legend has been passed down orally that a childless woman who prays devoutly to this tree will bear a child. Its single thick trunk splits into three major branches at a height of 2.7 m above the ground; branches killed some 60 years ago by a fire at a nearby house have all become bare twigs, but the tree retains a relatively well-preserved, roughly semi-oval shape and is in very good condition. The juniper is estimated to be about 800 years old, stands 10.8 m tall, and has a trunk circumference of 3.2 m at breast height. The Chinese Juniper of Yangnyeong-ri, Cheonan is in good condition and well-shaped, carries a time-honoured legend, and serves as the guardian tree of the village, where a dongje, a village guardian-tree ritual, is held every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month; for its great academic and folkloric value it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
