Geomunoreum Volcanic Cone in Seonheul-ri, Jeju is one of the 368 parasitic volcanic cones (oreum) found on Jeju Island. Located at an elevation of 400m on the north-eastern slope of Jeju Island, this oreum is surrounded by a dense concentration of caves. It is significant because it is the source from which lava flows issued, travelling north-east along the slope of the terrain to reach the coastline, and in doing so completed a lava tube system comprising some twenty caves, including Gimnyeonggul Lava Tube and Manjanggul Lava Tube. Within this cave system, three cave systems extend in different directions. The first, running from Geomunoreum to Dangcheomuldonggul Lava Tube, stretches about 13km; within this almost straight lava tube system, Baengdwigul, Manjanggul, Gimnyeonggul and Dangcheomuldonggul are connected in sequence, and their trace can still be followed on topographic maps. According to an academic survey of the Jeju Island Natural Heritage Area, the scale, length and speleothems (cave formations) of the lava tubes developed around Geomunoreum in Seonheul-ri have been confirmed to be of world-class standard. Owing to its very high academic and natural heritage value, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in June 2007.
