The Pine Forest of Hadong was planted in 1745, the twenty-first year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, by Jeon Cheon-sang, the local magistrate (dohobusa) at the time, to prevent damage from sea winds and blown sand; about 800 pine trees grow there today. The bark of the old pines is cracked like a tortoise shell, calling to mind the iron armour worn by generals of the past. Within the forest stands Hasangjeong, an archery pavilion that serves as a training ground for archers. The Pine Forest of Hadong is today Korea's foremost old pine forest, its beauty enhanced by the combination of a broad white sand beach and the clear waters of the Seomjingang River. Artificially created to block the sea winds of Gwangyang Bay and the wind-blown sand of the Seomjingang, it is a historic site that vividly demonstrates our ancestors' deep understanding of the use of nature and their true spirit of caring for the people as local officials. Given its very great cultural, historical, academic and scenic value, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
