The Bubusong ("Husband-and-Wife Pine") Trees in Jikdu-ri, Pocheon, are estimated to be about 300 years old. The two pines stand side by side in front of a low hill, appearing to embrace one another in a curious form, and from a distance they look like a single tree. Viewed from the north or south, their overall shape is strikingly beautiful, the crown seeming to flow down along the slope of the hill. The trees were originally to be named the "Weeping Pine of Jikdu-ri, Pocheon," but Pocheon, the managing body, held a public naming competition to mark their designation as a natural monument and to raise local residents' awareness of their protection. Because the trees stand together in an affectionate pose like a married couple, the suggestion to call them Bubusong was adopted, giving them this distinctive name. The Bubusong Pine Trees in Jikdu-ri, Pocheon, are venerable old trees of unusual and very beautiful form. According to legend, during the Japanese colonial period the Japanese cut off ten branches from these pines, believed to hold sacred spiritual power, in order to sever the vital energy of Joseon (Pocheon). Even today shamanist practitioners use the site as a place of prayer, and the trees have long been an object of folk worship for local residents. For their great historical, cultural and scenic value, they are designated and protected as a natural monument.
