Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Tracksite of Humans and Animals, Jeju, administratively spans Sangmo-ri, Daejeong-eup, and Sagye-ri, Andeok-myeon, in Seogwipo. It lies along the coastal road connecting Sanbangsan Mountain and Songaksan Mountain, about 3 km southwest of Sanbangsan and about 2 km northwest of Songaksan in a straight line. At the site, footprint fossils of various vertebrates occur in the Hamori Formation, deposited at the end of the Quaternary period of the Cenozoic era. About 500 human footprint fossils have been discovered at 13 locations, a rare occurrence even by world standards, and footprints of birds, proboscideans (elephant-like animals) and deer have also been found. The human footprint fossils range from 120 to 260 mm in length, with 180 mm being the most common, and from 60 to 90 mm in width, with 80–90 mm being the most common. The site also preserves fossils of bird feathers, crabs, leaves, gastropods, bivalves and sponges, along with trace fossils left by numerous invertebrates, and a variety of sedimentary structures are well exposed.
