Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Forest of David Hemiptelea and Dwarf Elms in Jusagol Valley, Yeongyang, is a mixed forest of several species planted to enhance the scenic beauty of Jusagol village and to protect it from wind and flood damage. Each year, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, a village ritual (dongje) is held at the village shrine (dongjedang), and the forest also serves as a village park. Jusagol is said to have once been a village where people of the Gang clan lived, but after they left following a great flood, the brothers Yi Do (pen name Jugok-gong, 1636–1712) and Yi Yong (pen name Jugye-gong, 1640–1693) are said to have moved here and planted this forest to enhance the scenery and guard against wind and flood damage. The name Jusagol is also said to derive from their pen names, Jugok-gong and Jugye-gong. The Forest of David Hemiptelea and Dwarf Elms in Jusagol Valley, Yeongyang, is more unusual than other bibo forests — forests planted according to traditional geomantic beliefs to remedy weaknesses in the local landscape — both for its uncommon combination of David hemiptelea and dwarf elm and for being divided into an upper and a lower forest laid one above the other. As a long-standing forest for flood protection, it holds great historical and cultural value and is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
