Korean Dendropanax of Jeongja-ri, Wando
완도 정자리 황칠나무 · 莞島 亭子里 黃漆나무

The Korean Dendropanax of Jeongja-ri, Wando, is the largest and oldest Korean dendropanax tree identified in Korea to date. The tree's golden sap is an outstanding and rare material for fine lacquer, and as a traditional coating used mainly by the royal court and imperial household, it holds very high academic value. Historical records of the Korean dendropanax appear in numerous sources, including the Samguk sagi, the Goryeosa and the Annals of King Jeongjo (Jeongjo sillok). In particular, the hwangchil lacquer of Jeongja-ri, in Bogil-myeon, Wando, was regarded as a local speciality, showing that it has been continuously preserved and managed. The Korean Dendropanax of Jeongja-ri, Wando, has survived to this day even though it is a useful resource located close to the village, because local residents regard it as a tree possessed by a divine spirit. Recognised for this historical and cultural value, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
