The plum tree has long been planted throughout Korea as an ornamental resource plant; loved by our ancestors for its elegant early-spring blossoms and deep fragrance, it has appeared without fail in poetry, calligraphy and painting. Among some 20 plum trees around Muujeon Hall and Palsangjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple, two old trees remain — one white plum and one red plum. The white plum stands 7.0m tall, with its trunk dividing into three branches whose circumferences at breast height are 88cm, 111cm and 113cm respectively, while the red plum stands 5.0m tall, with its trunk dividing into two branches whose circumferences at breast height are 86cm and 56cm respectively. The Seonammae Plum of Seonamsa Temple, Suncheon displays a beautiful form and vigorous growth. A record relating to the plum trees, together with the nearby Wallyongsong Pine Tree, survives in the ridge-raising record (sangnyangmun) of Seonamsa Temple's reconstruction during the Goryeo dynasty; given its great historical and academic value, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
