Ongnyongsa Temple in Gwangyang is located on the southern side of Baekgyesan Mountain (505m), a ridge branching from Baegunsan Mountain (1,218m); it is the place where State Preceptor Seongak Doseon lived for 35 years (864–898), trained disciples and passed away. The Forest of Common Camellias at Ongnyongsa Temple Site, Gwangyang is said to have been planted to compensate for the weak energy of the land, and it retains well the original form of camellia forests at temples in the southern region, giving it high historical value. About 7,000 camellia trees, each more than 100 years old, form an extensive grove around the temple site; given their great scenic and academic value for preservation, as well as their high historical value, they are designated and protected as a natural monument.
