Bengdwigul Lava Tube in Seonheul-ri, Jeju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Bengdwigul is a lava tube with a total length of 4,481 m, ranking among the most structurally complex maze-type caves in the world; it holds great academic value for revealing how maze-type lava tubes form, since the lava flowed continuously along complicated, branching paths across a flat plain. Because Bengdwigul formed close to the surface, the cave ceiling and the ground above it are very thin, resulting in several collapsed entrances. Inside, cave features such as two- and three-tiered passages, lava columns, and lava bridges are well developed throughout, making it one of the lava tubes registered, together with Manjanggul Lava Tube and others, as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Bengdwigul is currently designated a restricted-access area to protect its cave formations; access for management or academic purposes requires the permission of the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service.
