Chestnut Tree of Ungyo-ri, Pyeongchang
평창 운교리 밤나무 · 平昌 雲橋里 밤나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe road in front of the Chestnut Tree of Ungyo-ri, Pyeongchang, was once an important route linking Yeongdong and Yeongseo, the regions east and west of the Taebaek mountains. The ground before this chestnut tree is said to have been the stable of the former Ungyo post station and granary, and a village guardian shrine also stood here, which helped the tree survive well preserved. The chestnut tree stands 16.0m tall, and its trunk, which forks into two, measures 5.6m and 3.7m in girth at breast height respectively, both very large sizes. In the past the tree was called Yeongmyeongja, meaning roughly "so fine as to make one's name renowned", and it yielded three to four sacks of chestnuts a year. It is not only the largest and oldest chestnut tree known to date but is also in good health, giving it very great academic value as a native fruit-tree variety; it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
