Fossil Site in Gain-ri, Namhae
남해 가인리 화석산지 · 南海 加仁里 化石産地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Fossil Site in Gain-ri, Namhae, is an area where about 57 footprints of theropods (bipedal, carnivorous dinosaurs) form an exceptionally long trackway, up to 52m, and where more than 1,500 dinosaur footprints in total have been found. It is notable for the way a theropod trackway of such length appears concentrated within a single locality. Two distinct sizes of theropod footprint, large and medium, are present, and herbivorous dinosaur footprints (from sauropods and ornithopods) have been found together with the carnivorous dinosaur ones. On the coast nearby to the south-east, silicified wood, plant fossils, numerous other trace fossils, and sedimentary structures such as desiccation cracks and ripple marks occur on a large scale, with very well-developed horizontal bedding, making this a fossil site of great academic value. The official designation name was formally updated by notification on 26 July 2021.
