The Precambrian is an extremely ancient geological era predating the Paleozoic, and rocks from this era have generally undergone such severe metamorphism that their original structures rarely survive. The Precambrian strata on Maldo Island, in Okdo-myeon, Gunsan, however, still preserve sedimentary structures such as ripple marks and inclined bedding despite having undergone intense metamorphism and deformation. Study of these structures makes it possible to interpret Korea's Precambrian sedimentary environment, giving this stratum important academic value. The stratum also clearly displays a variety of structures produced by later crustal deformation; among these, the folds are notable not only for the diversity of their forms and types but also for the unusual way in which various structures incidental to fold formation appear alongside them. These include structures rarely seen elsewhere in Korea, such as duplex structures within bedding-parallel faults and folds superimposed through several stages of formation, and their state of preservation is excellent. These features are what distinguish this stratum from Precambrian strata found elsewhere in Korea.
