KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The bead tree had its sap extracted for use as an agricultural pesticide, its fruit used for medicine and prayer beads, and its timber made into simple implements; it even appears in the poetry of Jeong Yak-yong, and was commonly planted and tended in the southern regions, a tree that has long been part of the life of our ancestors. The bead tree of Gyochon-ri stands in a car park within the grounds of Gochang County Office, and is 20.2 m tall with a girth at breast height of 4.5 m. The bead tree of Gyochon-ri, Gochang is among the largest and oldest of its kind, and as the only old tree of its species growing this far north, it has both academic value and conservation value as a tree representative of Korea's bead trees, which are closely bound up with traditional life; it has therefore been designated and protected as a natural monument.
