Fold Structure in Nampo-ri, Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin
옹진 백령도 남포리 습곡구조 · 甕津 白翎島 南浦里 褶曲構造

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe fault and fold structure on the Jangchon coast of Nampo-ri, Baengnyeongdo Island is located on a sea cliff directly opposite Yongteurimbawi Rock, about 300 m along the coast west of Jangchon Harbour, and measures approximately 50 m in height and 80 m in length. This fault and fold structure formed in the Jangchon Formation of the Precambrian Baengnyeong Group, which is widely distributed across Baengnyeongdo Island, as a result of crustal movements that occurred widely across East Asia from the end of the Palaeozoic to the beginning of the Mesozoic era. That is, folds and faults formed as the rock underwent metamorphism and deformation under lateral compression deep underground, after which the crust weathered, eroded and gradually uplifted to form the present-day topography. A large-scale fault and fold structure exposed this clearly is very rare, and academic research on it not only provides extremely valuable material for clarifying the history of the Korean Peninsula's crustal development, but the geoscientific phenomena and processes involved in its formation are also expected to play an important role in field study for students and in nature experience and tourism for the general public.
