Suwolbong is one of Jeju Island's many oreum (volcanic cones), and, together with Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, Songaksan Mountain and Someori Oreum, is representative of the volcanic cones formed on the island by hydrovolcanic activity. The present-day topography of Suwolbong itself is unremarkable, but the outcrops of pyroclastic rock exposed along its western coastal cliffs are world class, and their academic value is very great. Suwolbong is, in particular, a volcanic edifice built up by a distinctive process of ash transport known as a pyroclastic surge, and because the outcrop along the coastal cliff extends laterally with such outstanding continuity, it is recognised as the world's finest outcrop of pyroclastic surge deposits. For this reason, the pyroclastic surge deposits of Suwolbong are introduced as an important example in numerous geology and volcanology textbooks, including Facies Models (Walker & James, 1992), Sedimentary Environments (Reading, 1996) and the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes (Sigurdsson et al., 2000).
