Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMuljangorioreum is one of the oreum, or volcanic cones, of Hallasan Mountain. Within its crater, rainwater collects on a clay floor and never dries up throughout the year, supporting a diverse range of wildlife. In and around the wetland grow plants such as bulrush, rush, softstem bulrush, white peony and Gastrodia elata, while the surrounding forest, with species such as hornbeam, painted maple, Korean maple and bigleaf dogwood, displays vegetation typical of a deciduous broad-leaved forest. Along with Hallasan Mountain and Yeongsilgiam, Muljangorioreum is regarded as a sacred place on Jeju Island; it is said to be where Grandmother Seolmundae, who is said to have created Jeju Island, resides, and records relating to rain-prayer rites survive, along with the foundation stones of a building around the wetland. Muljangorioreum, Jeju, is of great value to the folk life and culture of the Korean people, since the wetland within the cone never dries up throughout the year and there are records of rain-prayer rites having been held there in times of drought. It also holds great geological and topographical value in that water is retained and sustained on its clay floor, and great ecological value as a wetland habitat that brings together rare plants such as Jeju's endemic Hepatica insularis and the endangered mountain peony, together with Natural Monument species such as the peregrine falcon and the fairy pitta. For these reasons it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
