The sand pear (sandolbae) is a type of pear tree commonly found in Korea. It flowers from April to May and bears fruit in October. The Muchang-ri sand pear stands 13.0 m tall, with its trunk dividing into two branches whose girths at breast height are 2.8 m and 1.3 m respectively. This tree has been revered as the village's guardian tree (dangsanmok) since the village's founding; rites were held every year at the first full moon of the lunar year and whenever misfortune struck the village, and the way the tree blossomed was used to divine whether that year's harvest would be good or bad. In this way it has long been bound up with the village's history. The Muchang-ri sand pear of Yeongyang is an exceptionally large specimen, of great size, beautiful form and good health, which has been protected as the village's guardian tree. For this it holds not only biological value but also folkloric and cultural value, and is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
