The Rose of Sharon (mugunghwa) is a deciduous broad-leaved shrub of the mallow family. Its egg-shaped leaves are arranged alternately and divided into three lobes, with three prominent veins near the base, hairs along the veins on the underside, and serrated edges. The Rose of Sharon of Bangdong-ri stands 3.5 m tall, its trunk splitting into three stems with circumferences at breast height of 16 cm, 15 cm and 18 cm respectively. Although the Rose of Sharon typically lives only 40 to 50 years, the Rose of Sharon of Bangdong-ri, Gangneung, is over a century old, and its root-collar circumference of 146 cm makes it the thickest specimen currently known. Its flowers are of the hongdansim type, with a red centre, preserving the original form of a pure native variety, and for these reasons it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
