청주 연제리 모과나무 · 淸州 蓮堤里 모과나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe quince is a member of the rose family, distributed across Japan, China and other regions, and in Korea is planted south of the central region. The Yeonje-ri quince tree, standing in Quince Park within the Osong Life Science Industrial Complex, is 9.6 m tall with a girth at breast height of 3.0 m. The Yeonje-ri quince tree of Cheongju is one of the largest quince trees in Korea, with a fine form and good growth condition; its trunk shows pronounced undulations, and its surface displays a distinctive mottled pattern. It is said that in the early reign of King Sejo of Joseon, Ryu Yun, a scholar living in reclusion here, was summoned by the king; pointing to this quince tree and calling himself a useless man, he declined the summons, whereupon King Sejo personally wrote and bestowed upon him the royal calligraphy "Mudong Cheosa" (an epithet meaning roughly "the immovable recluse"). The Yeonje-ri quince tree of Cheongju is a historic tree associated with this royal calligraphy, and because of its great historical and cultural value in addition to its biological value, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
