Rainwater absorbed on the mountain slope passes through debris, dissolving iron and other minerals, before rising through a crevice beside the valley; its high content of both carbonate and iron gives it a distinctive fishy taste combined with a sharp tang, making it highly valuable in terms of water quality. It is said to have been discovered in 1891 by a hunter named Ji Deok-sam, from Hamgyeongbuk-do, while hunting in the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range.
