Habitat of Miho Spine Loaches in Jicheon Stream at Buyeo and Cheongyang
부여·청양 지천 미호종개 서식지 · 扶餘·靑陽 枝川 미호종개 棲息地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Miho spine loach is a species with a limited distribution, living only in Gapcheon Stream in Daejeon, Jicheon Stream between Buyeo and Cheongyang, and Baekgokcheon Stream in Jincheon; it is designated and protected as a natural monument, but since 2005 its population has been declining, making it necessary to designate its habitats for more effective protection in future. A field survey confirmed that Jicheon Stream, which flows along the boundary between Buyeo-gun and Cheongyang-gun, supports a large population of Miho spine loaches. With its gentle flow and a streambed composed mainly of sand no coarser than 2 mm, it provides a favourable environment not only for the Miho spine loach but also for the huinsumaja, a Class I endangered species, among other fish.
