Pillow Lava in Auraji, Pocheon

The pillow lava in Auraji, Pocheon, formed when basaltic lava — erupted either from the Chugaryeong Fault Line or from Mount Ori in Pyeonggang County, North Korea, during the Quaternary period of the Cenozoic era — flowed along the former course of the Hantangang River and cooled suddenly where the Yeongpyeongcheon Stream meets the Hantangang River. Such formations are rarely found on the Korean mainland. The site also has outstanding geological, geomorphological and scenic value, showing an unconformity between Precambrian metamorphic rocks and Quaternary basaltic lava flows, together with columnar joints, river-cut cliffs and well-developed layers of old soil (palaeosol).
