The zelkova is a tree found in warm regions of Korea as well as Japan, Taiwan and China. Its branches spread out in all directions to form a rounded crown; it flowers in May, and its disc-shaped fruit ripens in October. Because its trunk is thick and it is long-lived, the zelkova has often been used as a shade tree offering a resting place for villagers, or protected as a dangsan tree — a guardian tree believed to watch over and protect a village. The Saw-leaf Zelkova of Goegok-dong, Daejeon, is estimated to be around 700 years old, stands 17.8 m tall, and has a circumference at breast height of 11.3 m. It has long been regarded by the village as its guardian tree, and every year on Chilseok, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, all the villagers gather before the tree to hold the Chilseokje rite. Having served as such a spiritual focal point for the community, the tree holds great cultural value and is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
