The date plum is a broad-leaved deciduous tree of the persimmon family, found in China, Taiwan, Japan and, in Korea, areas south of Gyeonggi Province. The date plum of Hyeonnae-ri stands 19.2 metres tall, and its trunk, which splits into two branches, measures 3.1 metres and 2.9 metres in girth at breast height respectively. The date plum of Hyeonnae-ri, Gangneung, not only retains its distinctive form in height, root-collar girth, crown width and age, but is also rare in its physical dimensions, giving it natural and academic value. It has a close connection with everyday culture as a tree commonly used as rootstock when grafting persimmon trees, and it also holds great folkloric value as a guardian tree for which a village seonghwangje (shrine ritual) is held every year to pray for the community's peace and well-being. For these reasons it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
