The Hwaam Hermitage Cave, Jeongseon combines tunnels once used as mine workings with natural cave passages. Its natural section forms a large, open, plaza-like chamber roughly 100 m along its long axis, where large white stalagmites, stone columns, stalactites, helictites (gokseok, twisting formations that grow against gravity) and cave coral (seokhwa, delicate flower-like mineral growths) have developed. In its unopened sections in particular, cave coral appears in an outstanding range of colours, shapes and sizes, giving the cave a distinctive appearance and colouring that sets it apart from other limestone caves in Korea and gives it great academic and natural-heritage value.
