Jinju Samcheonpo Nongak (Farmers’ Performance of Samcheonpo, Jinju)
진주삼천포농악 · 晋州三千浦農樂

Jinju Samcheonpo Nongak is a nongak — a traditional Korean farmers' music and performance — handed down in the Jinju and Samcheonpo region, and belongs to the Yeongnam nongak tradition. The instruments used include the kkwaenggwari (small gong), jing (large gong), janggu (hourglass drum), buk (barrel drum) and beopgo (small drum). The performing group is made up of a flag-bearer, together with players of the kkwaenggwari, jing, buk, janggu and beopgo, as well as performers playing a yangban (nobleman) and a hunter. All the performers wear white trousers and a coloured jeogori (jacket) as their nongak costume, with a coloured sash and a hat called a sangmo, and individual solo performances are comparatively well developed. In the pan-gut (open-field performance), the chaesangmo nori (spinning-ribbon hat dance) stands out, and it features the distinctive Paljinhaesikjin-gut, a mock military drill unique to this tradition. Fast rhythms are often driven hard, giving the music a vigorous, richly varied and exuberant character. Jinju Samcheonpo Nongak carries on the tradition of the pan-gut and is of high artistic value, and it is distinguished by outstanding individual skills such as the paljinbeop (eight-formation drill), beokku nori (small-drum dance), sangsoe nori (lead gong player's solo) and mudong nori (a dance in which boys sing and dance).
