Goseong Nongyo (Farmers’ Song of Goseong)
고성농요 · 固城農謠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGoseong Nongyo is a traditional farmers' song transmitted in the Goseong area of South Gyeongsang Province. It centres on the various songs of farm work that begin around the summer solstice, collectively called deungji, deungji being the Gyeongsang-do dialect term for the rice-transplanting song. Goseong Nongyo includes the mojjigi-sori sung while pulling seedlings from the seedbed, the mosimgi-sori sung while transplanting them, the dorikkaejil-sori sung while threshing barley, and the sangsa-sori and Bangataryeong sung while weeding; besides these there are also the samsamgi-sori sung by women while spinning hemp thread and the mulle-taryeong sung while working the spinning wheel. The lyrics of Goseong Nongyo are rich in the everyday feelings of the local farmers and carry a strong local, earthy flavour. Although Goseong Nongyo is a Gyeongsang-do song that retains the rough, robust musicality distinctive of that province, geographical influence means that, musically, it is built on the gyemyeonjo melodic mode of Jeolla-do.
