Clothes Worn by King Gwanghaegun, His Queen Consort, and a Court Lady
광해군 내외 및 상궁 옷 · 光海君 內外 및 尙宮 옷

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFour garments worn by King Gwanghaegun (r. 1608–1623) of Joseon, his queen consort Lady Yu, and a court lady holding the senior fifth court rank of sanggung. When the Janggyeong Panjeon, the depository housing the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks at Haeinsa Temple, was repaired in 1965, these garments were found in a cavity beneath the southern roof, together with a record of the building's completion and a list bearing the sanggung's name. The four garments found at that time are a pale blue jingnyeong robe with a straight collar, a white ceremonial robe, a red ceremonial robe, and a purple jeogori jacket. These garments show sewing craftsmanship no less refined than machine stitching, offering a glimpse of the sophisticated tailoring methods of the time, and clearly reflect the clothing customs of the mid-Joseon period, making them important material for the study of Korean dress.
