Choe Jun’s House, Gyeongju
경주 최부자댁 · 慶州 崔富者宅

This is the head house of the Gyeongju Choe clan, said to stand on the site once occupied by Yoseokgung, a palace of the Silla period. The family has lived here for nine generations, and although the house is said to have been built around 1700, the exact date is unknown. The complex consists of a men's quarters (sarangchae), a women's quarters (anchae), a gate quarters, and other buildings, the gate quarters containing a small room and a large storehouse. The sarangchae once stood opposite the inner courtyard, but together with a detached pavilion it burned down in a fire in November 1970, and only its foundation remains today. The anchae, behind the site of the former sarangchae, has an open square-shaped form, though its main body actually has a U-shaped plan, and it was originally combined with an L-shaped sarangchae and a straight middle-gate quarters. There is also a separate family shrine to the northwest of the anchae, reached by a straight path running south that makes a striking impression. A flower garden behind the anchae adds beauty to the layout of the house. Because it largely preserves the original form of a Joseon-period yangban house, it is valued as important material. At the time of designation the name was 'House of Choe Sik of Gyeongju' (慶州崔植氏家屋), but because it is a house where the Gyeongju Choe clan has lived for generations and was widely known as the 'Rich Choe House of Gyo-dong,' one of Gyeongju's most famous wealthy families, it was renamed 'Choe Clan's Old House, Gyodong, Gyeongju' on 29 January 2007, and changed in February 2017 to its present name, Choe Jun's House, Gyeongju. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but viewing may be restricted owing to the personal circumstances of the owner and others.
