Folding Screen Embroidered with Grass and Insects (Four Panels)
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The screen consists of six panels in all. The four central panels are embroidery works by Sin Saimdang, while the two outer panels are paintings bearing inscriptions of praise by the painter Uijae Heo Baek-ryeon. Each panel measures 44.5 cm wide and 152 cm high. The first panel is an ink painting of chrysanthemums on a rock. The second is embroidered with a tree and tiger lilies, coloured to show a butterfly in flight. The third panel is embroidered with a tree and blooming peonies, with a butterfly flying above. The fourth is embroidered with a tree and blooming azaleas, with a painted butterfly flying above it. The fifth panel is embroidered with a tree and blooming chrysanthemums, painted in colour to show a bee in flight, and the sixth is an ink painting of rocks, a tree and bamboo. At the foot of the paintings is an inscription of praise written by the painter Heo Baek-ryeon. The embroidery is worked on a white silk ground using twisted threads in cream, yellow, blue, purple and chestnut, and may be counted among the finest examples of the craft. Sin Saimdang is said to have excelled at landscapes, grapes, and paintings of plants and insects, and to have also been skilled in embroidery. In particular, the brushwork of this painting of plants and insects matches that of the work of the same subject attributed to Sin Saimdang held by Dong-A University, and of the Sagyebungyeongdo held by Heo Dong-hwa, so there seems little difficulty in attributing this work to Sin Saimdang as well.
