Blue Silk Inner Robe
청초중단 · 靑綃中單

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a myeongju-silk hakchangui, a scholar's robe, from the late Joseon period, said to have been worn by Emperor Gojong (1863–1907). The hakchangui was a garment worn by learned and virtuous scholars of the Joseon period; similar to today's durumagi overcoat, it had wide sleeves and side gussets of a different cloth at the underarms, and was usually made in white. This particular robe, however, is made of navy-blue silk, edged along its borders with black trim, with a white silk dongjeong, a removable collar strip, attached. The coat ties measure 99.3 cm, indicating that this is a garment of the late Joseon period, and the sleeves are cut wide, at about 60 cm across. Rather than a hakchangui, this garment was more likely a jungui, an inner layer worn beneath the formal court robe worn by the king or his officials at state ceremonies. ※ Name changed: Cheongchoui → Cheongchojungdan (19 June 2006)
