Go Pyeong-o’s House in Seongeup Village, Jeju
제주 성읍마을 고평오 고택 · 濟州 城邑마을 高平五 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was once the lodging place for officials of the myeon (township) office of old Jeongui (present-day Seongeup) county. It is said to have been built in the late Joseon period. On a spacious site stand the main house (an-geori), the outer house (bak-geori), and a mokeori, a subsidiary building, between them. There was once another mokeori facing the existing one, but it was demolished in the mid-1970s. The present buildings, the main house and the outer house, were repaired in 1979, and the mokeori was also partly repaired at that time. All the buildings have their roofs covered with a net of straw rope to keep them from being blown off by the wind. The main house, set to the upper right just inside the gate, is three bays in size, with a wooden-floored hall in the central bay. To the front and rear on the left of the hall are the main room and a gopang, a storeroom for grain, while the kitchen (jeongji) is on the right. The kitchen once had a hearth for making fire, but this was removed during the 1979 repair. The outer house, facing the main house, was used by the township office officials; unlike the typical Jeju Island floor plan, its wooden-floored hall is placed to the east rather than in the centre, with two adjoining rooms. The mokeori is said to have been used as a shed or cattle shed for storing a cart and a nambangae, a Jeju-style mortar carved from a log, among other things. Its well-organised layout, the outer house with its unusual floor plan, and the paired double doors (horyeongchang) on the hall—a feature found only in some parts of southern Jeju—make the house valuable research material. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
