Go Chang-hwan’s House in Seongeup Village, Jeju
제주 성읍마을 고창환 고택 · 濟州 城邑마을 高昌煥 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was once used as an inn (yeoninsuk) in old Jeongui (present-day Seongeup) county. It appears to have been built in the early 19th century and stands next to the Jeongui Hyanggyo, a local Confucian school. It is a modest house consisting of a main house (an-geori) and a shed building, and is still known among local residents as the 'inn house'. Just inside the gate, the shed building stands to the left, and across the yard in front of it is the main house. Behind the main house is a broad kitchen garden with dense trees, harmoniously setting off the scenery both around and within the house. The main house is a typical three-bay house of the kind found in the area south of Hallasan Mountain. Viewed from the front, it consists, from left to right, of the kitchen, the wooden-floored hall and the main room; behind the kitchen is a small room, and behind the main room is a gopang for storing grain. A veranda runs along the front of the hall and the main room, and two pairs of double plank doors are fitted to the hall. The right-hand door has a horyeongchang, a small hatch used for exchanging a few words with someone outside. In front of the kitchen is a flat stone platform called a mulpang, on which a basket for carrying water jars was placed. The shed building is a single bay used for storing straw mats and household implements. An old-style outhouse stands beside the main house, while a modern-style outhouse stands at the entrance to the property, making an interesting contrast. Although it shows no distinctive house form specific to its use as an inn, it provides good material for examining the ordinary, modest form of an old farmhouse and for studying gateless traditional houses. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
