Han Bong-il’s House in Seongeup Village, Jeju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This house lies to the east of the centre of old Jeongui (present-day Seongeup) county. Built in the late Joseon period, it consists of a gateway without an actual gate, a main house (an-geori) and an outer house (bak-geori). Two large hackberry trees stand on either side of the gate area, and trees along the surrounding hedge further enhance the scenery of the house. The gateway, set on slightly lower ground, is three bays wide, with a shed and a cattle shed on either side of the entrance. The main house, to the left just inside the gate, has the typical form of a traditional house from the area south of Hallasan Mountain. Around the central wooden-floored hall, the kitchen (jeongji) and a small room are arranged front and back on the left, and the main room and a gopang for storing grain are arranged front and back on the right. The outer house, opposite the main house, is three bays in size and shows an unusual layout in which the wooden-floored hall forms a single, deep bay running front to back, with no separate room, while a small room is placed behind it. Its spacious layout and the natural surroundings that blend harmoniously with it add to the house's character, and because it retains well the original form of a traditional house from southern Jeju, it provides good material for examining the structure and function of traditional houses. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
