Blacksmith’s House in Seongeup Village, Jeju
제주 성읍마을 대장간집 · 濟州 城邑마을 대장간집

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a house said to have been used as a blacksmith's forge in the former county of Jeongui, present-day Seongeup. It is said to have been built in the late 19th century, and stands opposite the Go Pyeong-o House, a National Folklore Cultural Heritage, in front of what was once a well called Nammuntong, used only by officials of the township office. This road, running from the Guest House to the South Gate, is known as an important thoroughfare of the old town of Jeongui, and it is consistent with the general pattern that a blacksmith's forge, in any village, occupies an important point within that village. The building has no outer gate, and forms a simple L-shaped layout of a main house and a side wing set at an angle to it. Entering through the gate, the main house faces south with a yard in front. It has a central wooden-floored hall in the middle; to its right are a storage room and a small heated room, and to its left the main bedroom and a grain-storage space called a gopang, each arranged front to back. It has now been remodelled into an ordinary dwelling, but is presumed to have originally had the layout of a blacksmith's house. The side wing immediately to the left on entering the gate is a two-room building; as seen from the front, the room on the right served as a storage shed and the one on the left as a kitchen, which appears to have been fitted out in the mid-20th century. The house is a modest one, lacking even a kitchen garden, and most of it has been altered, but it is valued as good research material for having once served as a blacksmith's forge. ※ This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
