Yangdong Village is a clan village of the Wolseong Son clan and the Yeogang Yi clan, preserving many houses of deep tradition on the broad Angang Plain. This house is the head house (jongga) of Son Jung-no, known by his pen name Nakseondang, and stands to the north of the Son Dong-man House, the head house of the Wolseong Son clan. The house was built in 1540, the thirty-fifth year of King Jungjong of Joseon, and the name 'Nakseondang' originally referred to the men's quarters (sarangchae). The house broadly consists of a gate building, a main house and a servants' quarters, with a straight, single-line men's quarters attached to the side of the main house. The gate building measures three bays across the front and one bay in depth, forming a straight, single-line floor plan; around the central gate, a servant's room is placed to the right and a cattle shed—said to have originally been a stable—to the left. The main house has a straight, single-line servants' quarters combined with a U-shaped inner main block, together forming an overall square, mieum-shaped floor plan. This kind of structure is a common arrangement, but here the men's quarters yard and the storehouse wing are generously separated, and, unlike most yangban (aristocratic) houses, the platform base is built low—a technique rarely seen elsewhere. Looking from the main house courtyard, around the central hall there are an inner sarang room, an open storage hall and a storeroom to the right, and the main room, the kitchen, a room below the kitchen and a food storeroom to the left. The servants' quarters measures seven bays across the front and one bay in depth, with an inner gate at the centre, a storeroom to the right, and three servants' rooms to the left. The men's quarters measures five bays across the front and one and a half bays in depth, containing a hall and a men's room, and is connected to the main house. It is noted as valuable material for the way its structure and layout relatively emphasise function and practicality, while retaining a well-ordered, simple form. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or others.
