Yangdong Village is a clan village of the Wolseong Son clan and the Yeogang Yi clan, preserving many houses of long tradition on the high and low ground of the broad Angang Plain. This house was the home of Yi Neung-seung, known by his pen name Sahodang, and is also called Sahodang House. It was built in the sixth year of King Heonjong of Joseon (1840) and follows the typical square floor plan of an aristocratic house. It is composed chiefly of a main hall, a men's quarters and a servants' quarters: the U-shaped main hall is combined with a straight-line servants' quarters to form the overall square shape, and a straight-line men's quarters is joined to the main hall. In the main hall, the kitchen occupies the north-west corner; to its right are two rooms, a two-bay wooden-floored hall, and one transverse room, while to its left are one inner sarang room and one raised loft room. The men's quarters connects to the wooden hall on the right side of the main hall's transverse room, and consists of a sarang hall and two rooms, a small sarang room and a room for ancestral tablets. The main hall and men's quarters are built on relatively high foundations and have an unusually large kitchen; in particular, the raised loft room adjoining the inner sarang quarters is a feature not found in other houses. The transverse room and the sarang room are also placed in an unusual arrangement rarely seen elsewhere. The servants' quarters measures seven bays across the front and one bay in depth, and consists, from the east, of one bay for the main gate, one bay for a small door, two bays of storage sheds, and a three-bay storeroom formed by opening the bays into a single space. The house generally follows the conventions of the Yeongnam region, but its rooms have been rearranged to serve a variety of functions, and it is valued as good research material. At the time of its designation the house was named Yangdong Yi Won-bong House, but since it was the home of Yi Neung-seung, who held the rank of jinsa and built and lived in the house from 1840, its designated name was changed to Sahodang House, Yangdong, after his pen name (29 January 2007). ※ This heritage site is generally open to the public, but viewing may be restricted for personal reasons of the owner or others.
