Sangchunheon House in Yangdong, Gyeongju
경주 양동마을 상춘헌 고택 · 慶州 良洞마을 賞春軒 古宅

Yangdong Village is a clan village of the Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi families, where many houses of long tradition are well preserved on the broad Angang plain. Among them, this house once belonged to Yi Deok-rok and is also called Sangchun Gotaek, after Sangchunheon, the pen name of his descendant Yi Seok-chan. It is said to have been built around 1730, the sixth year of King Yeongjo, and has the open-ㅁ-shaped floor plan typical of yangban houses in Yangdong Village. It consists broadly of an anchae (main women's quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters) and haengnangchae (servants' quarters): the ㄷ-shaped anchae and sarangchae are joined to the ㅡ-shaped haengnangchae. Seen from the inner courtyard, the anchae has a ㄱ-shaped plan centred on a daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, with a geonneonbang (side room) fitted with a narrow toenmaru veranda to the right, and at the far left an anbang (main bedroom) with the kitchen placed beneath it. Notably, the anbang occupies the end bay usually reserved for the kitchen, following the common arrangement of houses in the central region. In the sarangchae, the sarangmaru, sarangbang and sarang-daecheong are arranged in a row. A flower bed was made on the platform of the sarangchae, and an ancestral shrine stands to the north of the sarang courtyard; a flower bed was also made on this northern platform, so that the sarangchae and the beds form a pleasing whole. The haengnangchae is six bays across the front and one bay to the side: to the right of the main gate is a single room, and to the left a one-bay storeroom, a one-bay wooden-floored room, and a two-bay storeroom made by opening the space into one. With its well-tended flower beds and elegant sarangchae, and its central-region arrangement, rare in Yangdong Village, this house is valuable folklore material. At the time of designation it was named 'Yangdong Yi Won-yong House', but since it was built in 1730, the sixth year of King Yeongjo, by Donggo Yi Deok-rok, and has become known as Sangchunheon Gotaek after Sangchunheon, the pen name of his descendant Yi Seok-chan, the designated name was changed on 29 January 2007 to its current form, Sangchunheon House in Yangdong, Gyeongju. ※ This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at certain times for reasons particular to the owner.
