Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYangdong is a clan village of the Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi families, which has preserved many houses of long tradition well on the broad Angang Plain. This house is said to have been built by Yi Jeong-su. Because his fifth-generation descendant Yi Hui-gu served as chambong (a low-ranking court post) in charge of Hongneung Royal Tomb, the house is also known as "Chambong House" or "Geunam House". It is said to have been built around 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, and rather than following the common square, ㅁ-shaped floor plan, its layout varies according to the function of each living space. The house is broadly composed of an outer gate quarters, a main quarters and a men's quarters. The gate quarters has a straight, ㅡ-shaped plan, with the gate at its centre, a storeroom to the left and a room to the right. The main quarters has an L-shaped, ㄱ-shaped plan, with the kitchen set at the bend. To the right of the kitchen stand the main room, the daecheong (a wooden-floored hall), the across room and a wooden-floored room, and below the kitchen are a two-bay room and a one-bay room. Beside the main quarters stands a shed four bays wide and one bay deep, now used as a cattle shed. The men's quarters stands apart, outside the wall enclosing the main quarters, an arrangement rarely seen even in the central region or Honam; this is thought to reflect the owner's traditional views on separating men's and women's spaces, and the building is small and simple, with two rooms and a one-bay daecheong. On the whole this is a plain, simply built house, and its distinctive arrangement, varying according to the function of each living space, makes it valuable material for study. At the time of designation the name was "Yangdong Yi Dong-gi House", but since it was built around 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, by Yi Jeong-su (art name Taero), and has come to be called "Geunam House" after the art name of his fourth-generation descendant Yi Hui-gu, chambong of Hongneung, the designated name was changed to "Geunam House, Yangdong" on 29 January 2007. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or other private matters.
