Yangdong is a clan village of the Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi families, which has preserved many houses of long tradition well on the broad Angang Plain. This house was built by Yi Ui-jam, the fourth-generation grandson of Yi Eon-jeok, who took the art name Sujoldang, and the house is named after it. It was built in 1616, the eighth year of King Gwanghaegun, and around 1744, the twentieth year of King Yeongjo, his sixth-generation descendant Yi Jeong-gyu (art name Yanghandang), who held the post of daesaheon, or Inspector-General, is said to have enlarged the men's quarters. The house stands halfway up the ridge across from Seobaekdang and Nakseondang, and follows the common open, ㅁ-shaped plan. It is composed broadly of an outer gate quarters, a main quarters, a men's quarters, a lower quarters and a shrine; the L-shaped main quarters, the straight lower quarters, the men's quarters and the gate quarters stand adjacent to one another, forming the basic layout. The men's quarters is four bays wide and two bays deep, divided into a sarang daecheong and a sarang room, with a half-bay-wide veranda in front of the sarang room. The gate quarters, built separately alongside it, has its roof set slightly lower than that of the men's quarters, a distinctive treatment regarded as reflecting the relative formal status of the two buildings, and a small sarang room is arranged to its right. In the main quarters the kitchen sits at the innermost corner of the L, with the main room, the daecheong and the across room to its left and a storeroom to its right. The lower quarters has the inner gate at its central bay, flanked by a cattle shed, a foot-powered mill (one mill is installed there) and a storeroom. The shrine stands on the hill behind the main quarters, enclosed within its own separate wall. As one of the few great houses in Yangdong Village to have its own shrine, it is valuable material for the study of traditional Korean culture. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or other private matters.
