Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYangdong is a clan village of the Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi families, which has preserved many houses of long tradition well on the broad Angang Plain. This pavilion was built by Son Yeop (art name Cheongheojae), grandson of Son Jung-don (art name Uje); its name is said to derive from the meaning "as clear as water and as empty as the clouds". It was built around 1582, the fifteenth year of King Seonjo, and during the Japanese invasions that began in 1592 the portrait of King Taejo, Yi Seong-gye, is said to have been enshrined here to escape the turmoil of war. The pavilion stands at a spot commanding a full view over the Angang Plain, and is divided into a men's quarters (the pavilion proper) and a servants' quarters. The pavilion is three bays wide and two bays deep, arranged with a daecheong and a room, and has a railed veranda at the front. Behind the pavilion, the servants' quarters contains one bay of wooden-floored room and one bay of servant's room. Among the many pavilions in Yangdong, it is regarded as occupying the finest site, with the most outstanding scenery. This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted due to the personal circumstances of the owner or other private matters.
