Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYangdong Village is a clan village of the Wolseong Son and Yeogang Yi families, where many houses of long tradition are well preserved on the broad Angang plain. This is the seodang, village school, of the Yeogang Yi clan, where Yi Yeon-sang, who held the pen name Jijokdang and had served as daesagan, chief censor, taught students. Together with Allakjeong, the Son clan's seodang in this village, it forms a matching pair, and is said to have been built around 1867, the fourth year of Emperor Gojong. The haengnangchae, servants' quarters, stands on a high hill to the west of Simsujeong Pavilion, a national folklore heritage, built separately between the seodang to the east and Simsujeong. Ganghakdang has a ㄱ-shaped plan, differing from the usual ㅡ-shaped layout of seodang buildings; this is thought to have arisen from the later addition of a wooden floor and a study beneath what was originally the anbang, main room. Centred on the anbang at the bend of the building, a two-bay daecheong and a geonneonbang, side room, are arranged to its right. The haengnangchae, following the basic form of small houses of the southern region, has a ㅡ-shaped plan consisting of a room, a room and a kitchen. The Yi clan also has another, larger seodang, Gyeongsan Seodang, but that building was moved and rebuilt recently and has a shorter history than Ganghakdang. This building, therefore, as a seodang of long clan tradition, together with Allakjeong, the Son clan's seodang, forms an important piece of folklore material for this village. ※ This heritage site is generally open to visitors, but access may be restricted at certain times for reasons particular to the owner.
